Water…water has so many facets of symbolic meanings and characteristics. The obvious characteristic of water that influenced me is obvious in the title of this song and became so lyrically strong to me that I chose it as the title cut for the album. It has the ability to flow and you cannot dictate where it flows, or at least not when it is out of control or over the banks of its perimeter.
Jake and I sat in his studio in Austin, TX and started looking at the lyrics he had already written. We started adding to the list things that happen when the flow of the God’s Spirit is moving and the song becomes a desperate prayer for Him to move in.
- “mighty rushing stream” - [this can example the destructive/constructive power of the flow.]
- “bring freedom and release” [wash away things to free me up in worship to Him]
- “let it flow down to me” [water only flows downstream…from Him to me]
- “awake me from my sleep” [in the night, a river out of control will wake you up]
- “through every breath I breathe” [I want to be “under” all the time…no option but to take in Him when I breath]
- “healing come to me” [healing in the flow of God’s Spirit]
- “sweep me off my feet” [become taken by the power of the flow]
- “take me where you lead” [go with the flow of where God’s Spirit leads]
- “refresh my thirsty soul” […will never thirst again when I encounter the flow]
